Arlington Partners with Parkmobile to Launch Pay-by-Cell Mobile App

  • Pay-by-cell starts end of July in Shirlington, Crystal City
  • Phased rolling launch through spring 2015
  • Residents and visitors can register for free

ARLINGTON, Va. – Arlington County announced today that it has partnered with Parkmobile USA, Inc., to bring residents and visitors a mobile payment solution for parking at all 5,329 metered spaces throughout the County.

Pay-by-cell is a mobile application administered by Parkmobile and is available for iPhone, Android, Windows 7 and Blackberry smartphones. The District of Columbia uses the same service, so residents and visitors will not need to download a separate application to park when traveling between Arlington and the district.

“This new technology will make it easier for our residents and visitors to pay for parking,” said County Manager Barbara Donnellan. “Arlington is always looking for ways to provide the best commuter experience possible — whether you use public transportation, bike, walk, or drive in and around the County.”

Phased roll out

The program will be rolled out in phases throughout Arlington's corridors. Parkmobile will be launched in Shirlington and Crystal City in late-July. The service will then be expanded to Pentagon City in the fall, followed by Ballston and Clarendon in the winter. Courthouse, Rosslyn, Columbia Pike and all remaining sectors will be rolled out in spring 2015.

How to Register and Use Parkmobile

To use the new service, residents and visitors can register for free at You will need a cellphone, credit card and license plate number to register. After the account is set up, users can immediately start using the system with the Parkmobile app, the Internet or calling toll-free to pay for parking. Users can also select the option to receive text message alerts to help avoid parking citations.

Payment using coins or credit cards via the County's multispace meter stations, single-space meters and iPark will still be accepted.

Arlington maintains a rich variety of stable neighborhoods and quality schools, and has received numerous awards for Smart Growth and transit-oriented development. Home to some of the most influential organizations in the world — including the Pentagon — Arlington stands out as one of America's preeminent places to live, visit and do business.
