ARLINGTON, Va. – Arlington County has been awarded accreditation by the International Accreditation Service, recognizing the County as an industry leader with a highly skilled staff that delivers top-notch customer service, and demonstrates innovative practices and procedures on building safety.
Arlington is the first County in Virginia, and only the 19th jurisdiction in the nation to demonstrate compliance with IAS's strict accreditation criteria for Building Departments and Code Enforcement Agencies. The accreditation award will be presented October 1 at the 2013 International Code Council (ICC) Annual Conference.

Exceptional customer service

The IAS evaluators observed work activities in the County's building offices, reviewed documents and policies, and interviewed customers, staff, external partners and County Board Members. The evaluation team noted that Inspections Services staff worked collaboratively with other divisions to serve customers. The Inspection Services Division's staff of 70 employees performs 55,000 inspections and approves 12,000 permits for more than 13 mil sq. ft. of construction annually.
Tools in place to expedite the permitting process
The County received recognition for its robust special inspection program, customer paper tracking system (CPTS), and user-friendly BuildingArlington website, where customers can schedule inspections, check permits and explore a wealth of information to help them complete their home improvement projects.
International Accreditation Service (IAS)
A subsidiary of the International Code Council, IAS provides an independent assessment and verification that building departments operate at the highest legal, ethical, and technical standards. IAS accredits building departments and building department service providers; fire prevention and life safety departments; special inspection agencies; product certification agencies; inspection programs for metal building manufacturers; fabricator inspection programs; testing and calibration laboratories; inspection agencies; training agencies; curriculum developers, and field evaluation bodies.
