In 2018, there were 31,436 reports of adult abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation in Virginia, a 16-percent increase from the previous year. Most substantiated reports of abuse fall under the category of neglect. Financial explotation is believed to cost older adults more than $36 billion annually.
Arlington County’s Adult Protective Services (APS) receives, identifies and investigates reports of abuse, neglect or exploitation of adults age 18 years or older who are incapacitated and anyone 60 and older. APS workers are professional social workers trained to handle complex situations. Based on the report, the social worker will assess the situation and determine how best to respond.
By law, the identity of the reporter, as well as the information gathered, is confidential and not available to the public. The individual who makes the report is also immune from civil and criminal liability, if the report is made in good faith.
