Exercise. It helps us maintain physical fitness and health. It can also boost our mental wellbeing and happiness. These are especially important as we age.
That’s why Arlington County has a dedicated fitness program for individuals age 55 and older. Classes and activities cover everything from aquatics, yoga and Pilates to cardio boxing, bootcamp and core conditioning.
One of the most popular activities is pickleball, a sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong. It’s quick and fast-paced but requires less running than tennis and can be played as doubles or singles.
“Research shows that people engaged in meaningful activities with others tend to lead healthier and longer lives,” said Jennifer Collins, with Arlington’s Office of Senior Adult Programs in the Department of Parks and Recreation.
“Our mission is to enhance the physical and mental well-being of Arlington’s seniors through programs and activities that foster wellness and a sense of purpose and community,” Collins said.
More ways to stay healthy and happy
While fitness programs are among the most popular activities offered by Arlington’s Office of Senior Adult Programs, there are many more aimed at promoting personal wellbeing and enrichment.
“Our programming also covers peoples’ interest in arts, travel, continued learning, mental workouts, recreational opportunities, social events, community engagement and more,” Collins said.
“You might take a painting class because it’s something you always wanted to do but never had the time. Or maybe you join one of our day trips someplace you’ve always wanted to visit. The opportunities we offer to learn, be socially engaged and enjoy life are great!”
Travel opportunities offered through the 55+ program include home and garden tours, Kennedy Center performances, sporting events, and recreational kayaking and hiking trips.
In any given week, more than 250 fitness, travel and other programs are on offer. Find them all in the County’s bimonthly 55+ Guide, available online.
