- Making a busy Cherrydale intersection safer
- Increasing water system’s redundancy, transmission capacity
The Arlington County Board today approved two infrastructure contracts: one to improve a busy Cherrydale intersection, and the other to increase the capacity of a water main under North Vacation Lane, from Lorcom Lane to North Military Road.
“These are two important projects,” said Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette. “One will make the complex Five Points intersection in Cherrydale easier to navigate and safer for anyone driving, cycling or walking there. The other will help us ensure our water system is more reliable by providing redundancy to the existing water main which will ensure the system has the proper back-up of water during critical repairs.”
Cherrydale Five Points intersection
The County Board voted 5 to 0 to approve a $1.7 million construction contract with A&M Concrete Corporation to improve the streetscape at the “Five Points” intersection of Lee Highway, Military Road, Old Dominion Drive, North Quincy Street and North Quebec Street.
This project is part of the County’s commitment to a safer, more walkable Cherrydale community, and will significantly enhance safety and mobility for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. Traffic signal equipment will be upgraded, bike lanes added, crosswalks and transit stops improved, sidewalks widened and ADA-accessible curb ramps added.
The changes focus on adding multimodal transportation design elements to the community but will also keep with the urban design elements of the Lee Highway Cherrydale Revitalization Plan, Master Transportation Plan, Lee Highway Visioning Study and General Land Use Plan.
Community comments and feedback have been incorporated into the design and construction is expected to begin this summer.
The project is included in the Fiscal Year 2017-2026 Adopted Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), and is funded through Revenue Sharing Grant Funds and Transportation Capital Fund Commercial and Industrial Tax (TCF-C&I) Funds. Water main improvement project
The Arlington County Board voted 5 to 0 to approve a $840,000 contract with Martin and Gass Inc. for water main improvements under North Vacation Lane from Lorcom Lane to North Military Road, in Donaldson Run. The project will increase system redundancy and transmission capacity. The work is expected to begin late May/early June 2017.
This project, Gravity One Supply North Main, is the first of two phases (Gravity One Supply South Main is the second phase). It will add 8,550 feet of a 24-inch main north of I-66, and tie into the existing 30-inch water main and an existing 36-inch water main. The project schedule was accelerated to avoid conflicts with construction at the nearby Stratford School, set to be expanded and renovated as a neighborhood middle school.
This project was identified in the Water System Master Plan of 2014. To read the staff report on this project, view the agenda for the Saturday, April 22 Regular County Board Meeting. Scroll down to Item No. 19.
