ARLINGTON, Va. – With the March 15 deadline for requesting tickets to the USS Arlington commissioning in Norfolk, Virginia rapidly approaching, Arlington County officials are urging residents to join this festive, free and historic event.
Ticket reservations for the Saturday, April 6, 2013 commissioning may be made online, at www.ussarlingtonlpd24.org (scroll down to the bottom of the page). The event is free, but you must apply for tickets by March 15. The ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Naval Station Norfolk, Pier 14. This is an official United States Navy event.
USS Arlington (LPD-24) is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock. It will be the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for Arlington, Virginia, home to the Pentagon.
USS Arlington and her sister ships, USS New York and USS Somerset, are named in commemoration of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Steel taken from the Pentagon after the September 11 attacks will be displayed aboard the USS Arlington.
