Dr. E. Reed Smith, Operational Medical Director for the Arlington County Fire Department, received the 2018 Governor’s EMS Award for Physician with Outstanding Contribution to EMS for his groundbreaking work in tactical emergency casualty care.
Dr. Smith is also an emergency physician and author who has served a key role in the innovative medical care in the Northern Virginia region. His groundbreaking work in Trauma Emergency Casualty Care and the Rescue Task Force has been emulated nationally and internationally.
Specifically, Dr. Smith was recognized for the Until Help Arrives program, which teaches citizens how to react and respond during an emergency. The program is gaining national attention as the most thorough training program available to the bystander of a violent event.
