Based on the same principle as joining with neighbors to buy food in bulk, co-op members buy solar power systems together to save money and share knowledge.
The group uses a competitive bidding process to select a single company that will install systems on all of the participating homes.
Each participant signs his or her own contract with the installer, but everyone gets the bulk discount. Members also are eligible for the 30 percent renewable energy tax credit offered by the federal government.
More than 80 Arlington residents have gone solar using VA SUN co-ops, doubling the number of systems in the County. Those homeowners are enjoying lower power bills and lighter carbon footprints.
